Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ: What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy of locating and correcting vertebral subluxation using specific chiropractic adjustments which allow your body to function to its optimum potential.

FAQ: What is a subluxation?

A misalignment of one or more vertebrae which causes interference to your nervous system. If your nervous system is impaired your body’s innate ability to heal itself and function optimally is also impaired.

FAQ: How do subluxations happen?

There are three causes of subluxation. Physical causes such as trauma, repetitive motions and poor lifting technique. Chemical causes such as poor nutrition, alcohol, drugs or pollution. Emotional causes including grief, anger, stress or fear.

FAQ: How will I know if I have a subluxation?

Many subluxations exist without causing symptoms. As with the early stages of tooth decay or cancer, subluxations can be present before symptoms appear. Regular chiropractic checks can detect and correct subluxations before symptoms appear.

FAQ: What is an adjustment?

Chiropractic adjustments usually involve a fast thrust that restores motion to spinal joints that aren’t moving correctly. There are many chiropractic techniques. The purpose of the adjustment is to correct subluxations and remove nerve interference in your body.

FAQ: Will the adjustments hurt?

Most people enjoy their adjustments and look forward to them. Occasionally people feel uncomfortable or sore because the area being adjusted is already inflamed. After adjustment joints start to move more easily allowing the joint to settle down and become more comfortable.

FAQ: Is chiropractic care safe??

Yes. Research shows that chiropractic care is one of the safest forms of healthcare in the world, with adjustments shown to be around 100 times safer than taking over the counter pain killers!

FAQ: Can chiropractic make the bones move too much?

No. Chiropractic adjustments are safe and specifically delivered to restore movement to joints that aren’t moving well. This allows weakened muscles and ligaments to heal and stabilise the spine which reduces nerve interference and pain.

FAQ: What causes the sound made during an adjustment?

Some chiropractic adjustments can produce a sound as the fluid in the joints move, rather like opening a bottle of fizzy drink. Not all chiropractic techniques produce this noise, in fact, some techniques use little force and produce no noise at all.

FAQ: Is it bad to crack your own neck or back?

Some people feel the desire to “crack” their own neck or back thinking it’s the same as a chiropractic adjustment, but it isn’t. “Cracking” your own back may bring temporary relief from symptoms, but this will not address the problem. The cause of the spinal tension, the subluxated vertebrae, has not been corrected. Even a chiropractor cannot adjust him or herself.

FAQ: Are all clients adjusted the same way?

No. Every clients plan of care depends on their individual presentation. Every clients plan of care is tailored to their condition and health goals.

FAQ: Can I have chiropractic care after spinal surgery?

Yes. Your chiropractor will know which areas of your spine can or cannot be adjusted safely. Surgery often causes spinal instability above and below the level of involvement. These areas will be the focus of chiropractic care.

FAQ: Is chiropractic care safe if I have osteoporosis?

Yes. Your unique circumstances will be considered when developing a plan of care. There are many ways to adjust the spine and the method selected will be best suited to your individual needs.

FAQ: How many adjustments will I need?

The number of adjustments required varies according to each clients needs and goals. Most clients experience improvement within a 4-6 adjustments. Visits become less frequent as your spine stabilises but regular visits are recommended to maintain your health.

FAQ: Why should I continue with chiropractic care now I feel better?

Many clients seen by chiropractors have spinal degeneration which has developed over years. The trauma of the birth process, falls, accidents other stresses over a lifetime all affect the health of your spine. Generally the longer subluxations exist the longer they take to correct. Usually clients who stop their chiropractic care because they “feel better” return with the same issues that made them seek help in the first place. Those clients who commit to long term wellness care generally experience a much higher level of health and wellbeing.

FAQ: Why do children need chiropractic care?

The birth process is often the cause of a child’s first subluxation. Then as children grow up the number of falls and other traumas as they learn to walk and play become countless. Often children do not show any signs or symptoms of subluxation until later in life. Chiropractic care during childhood will detect and correct subluxations helping children through their windows of development minimising the risk of future health issues.
